Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I headed west to spend time with my parents and Aunt D. We ventured into the city a few times over the holiday. Each time, I noticed the subtle yet significant differences in how people would interact. I noticed immediately the eye contact. People working in the mall and elsewhere in service jobs were giving lots of it. They would look you dead in the eye and smile warmly. They were more genuine expressions than I was accustomed to. It hit me like a ton of bricks.
I need that. I find that warmth sorely lacking in my fair city. Pleasantries are exchanged in this town, yes. But often with a stiffness and staleness that robs the words of any significant impact. I am reminded of this often when I travel. And my recent trip was clearly no exception.
